A Signature
Color Story
Saratoga has shared the gift of its local natural springs for over 150 years. Now, our cobalt blue color is celebrated through our partnership with Pantone, telling the story of the history of Saratoga® Signature Blue.
2000 BC - BLUE FROM BC AND BEYOND
Dating back to Mesopotamia, blue became a staple in porcelain and glass, and centuries later, cobalt oxide smalt appeared as a pigment in Egyptian pottery and in the Aegean region. The color became a sign of luxury, as blue glass implied the owner was prosperous.
19th CENTURY - CREATION OF COBALT
Chemist Louis Jacques Thenard produced the cobalt blue pigment which catalyzed the use of brighter blue shades that the most renowned artists worldwide began featuring in fine art and design.
1872 - A BRAND IS BORN
After discovering natural springs in Saratoga Springs, New York, a few entrepreneurs harnessed the taste and began bottling it. They chose a blue hued glass for bottling.
1960s - the impact in art
Vibrant pop art by artists like Andy Warhol and Keith Haring brought cobalt blue into fine art and design starting in the 1960’s.
1990-2000s - Fashion Icon
Cobalt blue was featured in collections by more traditional fashion houses, as well as those designers considered Avant Garde.
2024-Today – PANTONE x SARATOGA
It is cobalt’s dynamic vivacity and perception of opulence that has transitioned Saratoga Spring Water and its signature cobalt blue bottle into the sphere of luxury in design, elevating the every-day. Saratoga Signature Blue is a declaration of the life one chooses to lead.
